Valuing the Unlicensed Commons

Comparable Licensing Value (CLV)

CLV

Definition

A valuation method that uses arm's-length licensing transactions for similar assets in adjacent fields as benchmarks for the value of stranded knowledge assets.

Example

A shelved software patent valued by reference to licensing rates for comparable patents in the same technology domain, adjusted for age and scope.
